Q&A with the Class of 2024: Kelby Proctor, School of Industrial Design, Engineering and Art (IDEA)
Kelby Proctor, IDEA student

It’s likely no surprise to anyone who knows Kelby Proctor that she is pursuing a career in teaching. This IDEA senior has already had two teaching internships and learned enough during them to create a vision for her future.

Proctor served as an English class intern teacher at Wainwright Intermediate through the school district’s Next Move program. She also served as a robotics intern teacher with the Head Start preschool program, where she helped students use color codes to build robots.

“Being at Head Start helped me understand lesson planning and helped me figure out how to help kids regulate their emotions,” Proctor said. “And it just made me really happy.”

Her time at IDEA has fostered a love for education and a great respect for her own teachers.

“I see in them someone I want to be in the future,” she said. “I really like the time I’ve had at IDEA. I can always go to a teacher mentor for help. They’ve pushed me to live up to my potential.”

Here’s what Proctor has to say about her experience and her next steps.

What are your plans for next year?
I’m going to Oregon State University to study elementary education. I’d also like to join a sorority because philanthropy is important to me.

What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?
Teaching at Head Start because I could tell I really made an impact. Being one of the first people to expose kids to robotics was really cool. Seeing that spark ignite was truly meaningful.

What’s a challenge you’ve overcome?
When I got to IDEA, it was mostly online. I struggled to connect with people. I struggled making friends. Now, I’ve got a great, solid group of friends, and they’re some of the best people I know.

What would your biggest fan say about you?
I’m really passionate about education and helping people. I care about what I’m putting into this world.

Describe yourself in three words:
Passionate. Perseverant. Thoughtful.
