After graduation, I plan on going to UW Seattle, where I currently plan on getting a Bachelor's in Visual Communications. With this degree, I hope to become a graphic designer, where I can improve up to the point of becoming an Art Director. I also hope to become a published author.

Why This Event?

I have had practice with concept art beforehand, and from what I know, it's one of the only categories that prioritizes free-hand illustrations. Since I'm best at that, I decided to stick with just Concept Art.

The Design Brief

For 2026, the Concept Art theme was to design a device that a villain would use in a theoretical movie to read the minds of victims. Additionally, there should be a design for a marketable popcorn bucket. The project required that I write a written brief explaining my work, a mood board, a show of brainstorming sketches, six isolated drawings, a model sheet, and a final illustration displaying the device in action.

Toolset & Engineering/Design Methodology

Software includes Clip Studio Paint and Canva (for the mood board), while hardware features my iPad Pro (12.9-inch) (6th generation) and an Apple Pencil.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the most difficult parts of the process, for me, was deciding on which design to go with. Early on, I was unsure if the design I chose early on would be the right one to run with, and I didn't have many opportunities to take feedback from others. Eventually, I chose a design and worked some lore into it to make it interesting and a more effective choice.

WTSA State Conference Experience

I remember my teammates, and how supportive we were of each other when going to our events. Both giving and receiving that support throughout the conference will always be a highlight of my time there -- truly, the actual 1st place reward was the friends we made along the way.

The Veteran's Brief (Advice for Newcomers)

If you have an early-entry event, such as the Concept Art category, give yourself time to work. The six isolated drawings of my project were the most grueling, to say the least. Inspiration is scarce, especially when you're stuck drawing the same thing over and over again. Give yourself good time.
